Karoo Seven Passes Tour

This tour is available throughout the year to suit your timing.

Day 1 - Stilbaai to Ladismith

Guests are met at a location between Stilbaai and George. From here we head over the Garcia Pass for Ladismith where we enjoy a light lunch, then on to book in, enjoy a relaxing afternoon or you can take a stroll around the quaint town looking at the interesting architecture. In the afternoon, we take a wine tour at the local well known winery. After relaxing on the veranda, our hosts will treat us to a wonderful home cooked meal.

Overnight: Ladismith
Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2 - Ladismith to Calitzdorp

After a sumptuous breakfast in this well-appointed Manor, we depart for a tour down our second pass, Seweweekspoort which winds its way through the Swartberg Mountains following a stream between the most beautifully folded sandstone cliffs. You can take strolls in this beautiful Nature Reserve, do some bird watching or try recognising some of the wonderful flowers and trees; Alice or Patrick, your personal nature guides will be happy to help you with this. On our way back through the pass, we stop and have a picnic lunch. Thereafter, we head for our third pass, Huisrivier Pass which winds itself over the hills to Calitzdorp. Here you can visit a dried fruit and homemade sweet factory which was set-up to help alleviate poverty in the area by teaching the locals skills and entrepreneurship. Calitzdorp is known as the capital of port wines in South Africa so you can't go past without doing some wine tasting. After your taste buds have been tickled, you have the opportunity to purchase some of their excellent wines. We enjoy a meal, relaxing and watch the sunset over the beautiful mountains.

Overnight: Calitzdorp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3 - Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the pool, we set off to a Private Nature Reserve. This farm is situated between three plant biomes and has one of the richest plant diversities in the Karoo. After a lunch under an umbrella of sweet thorn trees, our host will show you some of the unique plants on his farm. You can enjoy some refreshment on our excursion and thereafter return to enjoy a traditional braai (barbeque) under the stars. We retire to our accommodation on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn.

Overnight: Oudtshoorn
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 - Oudtshoorn

After a very special breakfast, we set off to see the wonders of Oudtshoorn; we start at Cango Caves after driving through the beautiful Schoemanspoort - you can partake in a guided tour of these beautiful limestone caves which extend over five kilometers into the earth. From here, we head for Cango Wildlife Ranch where they breed endangered wildlife in a protected environment; we enjoy a light lunch and learn about their efforts in conservation. Our next stop is at the Cango Ostrich Farm; here we learn all about this flightless bird, the largest bird in the world - you could even sit on one or if you are brave enough, ride it! We learn about them from egg stage to adult as well as the different products made from them. After all the activities of the day it's time to head back to our accommodation where we can relax around the pool or enjoy a drink in the pub. Tonight we sample the fantastic cuisine of our hosts in their well-appointed dining room.

Overnight: Oudtshoorn
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5 - Oudtshoorn to Prince Albert

This morning after breakfast we regrettably have to leave Oudtshoorn with all it's attractions and take the route through Schoemanspoort once again but turn off just before Cango Caves and head for the spectacular Swartberg Pass. During the ascent on the southern slopes of the Swartberg Mountains which are covered in a fantastic variety of proteas and other fynbos (fine bush) flowers each flowering at different times of the year, you could also be fortunate to see a Ground Woodpecker amongst many other bird species. As we reach the summit of the pass, we see an enormous change of scenery; the northern slopes of the mountains are rugged and twisted with the most amazing civil engineering feat; the pass, descending to the distant plane below carving it's way down the most amazing sandstone gorges till it winds it's way into Prince Albert. We enjoy a quiet lunch in Prince Albert after booking into our accommodation. The afternoon is free for you to explore this beautiful safe village or just chill-out and relax. Our accommodation is very central and we stroll to the restaurant for our evening meal; after dinner you can stroll around the village if the mood takes you.

Overnight: Prince Albert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6 - Prince Albert to Klaarstroom

Breakfast taken care of, we set off on a reasonably early walk to beat the heat of the day. Today, we go on a guided walk at Bushman Valley - the San people occupied this valley for thousands of years and our guide will teach us all about them and their lifestyles and implements. On our return from this wonderful experience, we enjoy some refreshment before returning to Prince Albert for lunch. On our way to Klaarstroom, we stop at Bergwater Vineyards where we do some wine and olive tasting. From here we travel over our fifth pass, the Kredouw Pass to Klaarstroom. We spend our last night together in this tiny village at a gracious Victorian homestead. Our hosts will provide you with a home cooked traditional Karoo meal.

Overnight: Klaarstroom
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7 - Klaarstroom to Drop-off

We enjoy our last breakfast together before setting off. Today we travel through the last two passes, the first being Meiringspoort. We once again follow a river through the Swartberg Mountains through the most dramatic gorge (this time on a tarred road). We occasionally stop to enjoy photographic opportunities; you may enjoy a short walk to the waterfall where we will have some refreshment. After exiting the poort, we go through the village of De Rust and then on through Oudtshoorn to the last pass, namely the Outeniqua Pass. Halfway down the pass, we stop at a view site to view the three other historic passes across the valley. On entering George, we make our way to The Garden Route Mall where we will enjoy our last meal together.

We will drop you off at a place of your choice between George and Still Bay and sadly say our goodbyes. Until we meet again, that is.
