Oudtshoorn Spectacular We set off for Oudtshoorn at the above times for the various towns. We travel up the Outeniqua Pass taking in the beautiful sights on the way up and then continue through Waboomskraal which is famous for hops growing and being the main hops area in South Africa. We then cross the Little Karoo to Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich capital of the World and pass through the City with all its beautiful stone buildings and make our way north to the famed Cango Caves. Although the extensive system of tunnels and chambers extend for over four kilometers, only about a quarter of this is open to visitors who may proceed into the cave only in groups supervised by a guide. Tours are conducted at regular intervals on most days - there is a Standard Tour which takes an hour and an Adventure Tour which takes an hour and a half. The caves contain spectacular halls and grand limestone formations (on both tours) and also include some rather small passages on the Adventure Tour. The smallest passage that tourists will have to pass through on the Adventure Tour is just under 30cm high at the exit. You may choose which tour you would like to do. When our tour is over, we retrace our footsteps to the Cango Ostrich Farm where we find out all about these large flightless birds. Cango offer comprehensive and complete information regarding the ostrich and ostrich industry. The tour includes information on the birds, eggs, incubators and chicks. You can feed the ostriches by hand or sit on one; for the daring type, you can ride one (within weight limits) and stand on the eggs (no weight restrictions). From here we head for the Cango Wildlife Ranch which was established in 1993 and is a member of the Cheetah Conservation Foundation. The ranch is one of the leading cheetah breeders; not just in South Africa but the entire continent of Africa and is one of the world's five top protection institutions. The breeding enclosure is not available to visitors but they are permitted to enter a fenced area to interact with tame Cheetah (optional extra). Walkways elevated over a natural bushveld environment allow people relatively close views of powerful predators such as the Lion, the Jaguar and the Puma. Crocodiles and alligators, of which there are over 400, are also bred at the ranch and exotic snakes on show include a South American albino python, a 4m (13ft) boa constrictor and a copperhead viper. A breeding programme is also underway for the endangered Cape wild dog. The ranch has a unique restaurant overlooking a watering hole inhabited with flamingo and black swan where we will enjoy our lunch before we partake in their Valley of the Ancients super tour (included, all other activities are extras). All this done, it will be time to head home once again. You will be dropped off where you alighted or at a place of your choice between George and Still Bay. Cost R1,200.00 per person sharing based on 4 passengers travelling together. |
