Karoo Flowers & Cango Caves

We set off for Oudtshoorn at the above times for the various towns. Today we are going to see one of the wonders of the Little Karoo, the amazing plants and flowers of this semi-desert area. To get there we head across the Outeniqua Mountains on the Robinson Pass, a very scenic drive over these awesome mountains. Once over the pass, we head for this amazing area where our host, the owner of this wonderful Private Nature Reserve, will point out some of the awesome flowers in bloom at the time. At the same time we could see the endangered Red Riverine Rabbit or a Mongoose among other small wildlife found in the reserve.

The Nature Reserve lies between three different plant biomes; the majority of the farm is Succulent Karoo. Our host's enthusiasm and boundless knowledge of the little things that grow on the ground certainly will astound you. As a rule such dry landscapes have few species but the Succulent Karoo is a unique exception. There are more than 6000 plant species in this area of which 40% are endemic. More than 1,000 of the endemic species are succulents. It makes the Succulent Karoo the area that is the richest in succulent flora in the world.

At lunchtime you will be treated to a lovely picnic lunch in the exquisite quietness of this totally special reserve.

After lunch you will have the choice of extending your fascinating day here or moving on to either the Cango Caves or go to the Safari Ostrich Farm for a quality guided tour of their facility.

We head back to your destination in the George to Still Bay area via the Outeniqua Pass where we drop you off at a destination of your choice.
