De Hoop Game, Bird & Whale Watching After picking you up between George and Still Bay we leave for De Hoop at 07h45 after you have had breakfast. We proceed down the N2 through Riversdale, Heidelberg and Swellendam before turning off to De Hoop some distance out of town. On arrival at De Hoop, we head straight for Koppie Alleen, the whale watching point. Here we enjoy the fantastic views of the whales frolicking in the bay, we also get close-up views of the dunes and it is also a good game viewing site. From here we proceed on the circular game route where we search for some of the endangered Bontebok. There could also be the opportunity to see Cape Mountain Zebra, Caracal, Baboons, Ostriches, Eland and a large variety of other smaller game. A picnic lunch is enjoyed at a designated site where we can look out for some of the many birds found here. There is a 16km long coastal lake in the reserve where many wetland bird species are found including Grebes, Coots and Herons amongst others. Depending on the fitness of the group there are two possible walking trails that can be completed within two hours. For the not so fit an alternate drive can be arranged. Most of the reserve is covered by lowland fynbos, an attractive bushy vegetation being part of the Cape Floristic Region and at De Hoop a number of these endemic plants occur in small patches. Proteas, Ericas, Restios, Bulbs and Corms are typical of the area. In August, many of these plants will be in flower and one can wonder at their beauty. At about 15h30 we must start our journey home, you will be dropped off at a destination of your choice between George and Still Bay and sadly we will say goodbye. Cost R1,100.00 per person sharing based on 4 passengers travelling together. |
